Nerve Blocks and Epidural Blocks in Veterinary Practice

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the use of local anesthesia and analgesia through plexus and peripheral nerve blocks, as well as epidural blocks.

By managing pain locally, the need for systemic anesthesia and analgesia is reduced, optimizing patient recovery and quality of life.

The course includes theoretical presentations, practical demonstrations, and hands-on exercises, equipping participants with the skills to implement these techniques in their own practice.

Clinical Applications:

• Nerve and epidural blocks are effective tools in a wide range of clinical situations in dogs and cats:
• Diagnostics: A valuable tool for confirming diagnoses (e.g., lumbar block prior to surgery for lumbosacral pathology or shoulder block for forelimb lameness).
• Orthopedic Surgery: Used in cruciate ligament surgeries, patellar luxation, fracture management, etc.
• Soft Tissue Surgery: For abdominal surgery, tumor resections, ear canal ablation, or perineal surgery.
• Acute Pain Patients: For trauma cases where nerve blocks can stabilize the patient with reduced need for opioids and other systemic analgesics.
• Palliative Care: Effective pain relief for chronic conditions, maintaining quality of life until possible euthanasia.

• Skills in performing peripheral nerve blocks with a nerve stimulator
• Competence in ultrasound-guided nerve blocks

The course does not cover dental blocks.
